If you enjoy hiking even while staying by the sea, just outside the seaside town of Sainte-Maxime, you’ll find a beautiful panoramic trail that takes less than three hours to walk. Known in French as Le sentier du Deffend, this trail features gentle elevation changes and stunning views. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a 360° view from the Estérel massif to the Maures massif across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. On clear days, you can even see the Alps.

Le sentier du Deffend is also an excellent choice for dog lovers. Your four-legged friends will enjoy the walk just as much as you. The nature surrounding the trail offers plenty of space for free movement and exploration. However, don’t forget to bring water for your pet, especially on warmer days.
Older school-age children will also handle the trail well. For smaller children or strollers, the path is not entirely suitable.
Make sure to wear good sports shoes and a cap, as there is limited shade from trees along the path. Especially in the summer, it’s essential to cover your head due to the sun.
Bring enough water, particularly in the summer, and a small snack. The trail runs entirely through nature, with no places to buy refreshments, not even at the parking lot. There are no trash bins along the way, so be environmentally conscious and bring a bag to carry your trash back with you.
At the trailhead, there is a small parking lot that can accommodate about 15 cars. The trail is not very crowded, and we’ve never had trouble finding a parking spot.
In Sainte-Maxime, follow Chemin des Saquèdes to the parking place.
